About Khan el-Khalili Bazaar

Khan el-Khalili is one of the oldest and most atmospheric markets in the Arab world, founded in 1382 by the Mamluk prince Jarkas el-Khalili. Located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, the bazaar covers a sprawling network of covered alleyways where merchants sell spices, handcrafted jewellery, perfume oils, textiles, leather goods, ceramics, papyrus, and traditional Egyptian crafts — much as they have for over 600 years.

Beyond shopping, Khan el-Khalili is a living neighbourhood where local craftsmen work in narrow workshops and the scent of freshly ground coffee mingles with exotic spices. The nearby El-Fishawi café — open continuously for 200+ years — is the ideal place to rest with a cup of mint tea and watch Cairo’s street life. The bazaar is at its most lively in the late afternoon and evening, when the alleyways fill with both locals and visitors.

What to See & Experience

The Spice Market

The dedicated spice section of Khan el-Khalili is a riot of colour and aroma — cumin, saffron, dried hibiscus, karkade — and a great place to buy authentic Egyptian spices and herbal teas.

El-Fishawi Café

Cairo's most famous café, continuously open for over 200 years. Settle in for a traditional mint tea or Egyptian coffee and watch the bazaar's vibrant street theatre.

Jewellery & Goldsmith Quarter

The gold and silver jewellery section offers intricate Egyptian designs — cartouche necklaces, ancient scarab motifs, and handcrafted silver — at negotiable prices.

Practical Tips

1Bargaining is expected — start at 40–50% of the first asking price
2Gold and silver are sold by weight; quality items have hallmarks
3Avoid pressure buying — ‘just looking’ is always acceptable
4Carry small denomination Egyptian pounds for small purchases
5Visit in the late afternoon (4–7 PM) for the best atmosphere
6The bazaar is very large — if you get lost, ask a shopkeeper to point you toward Al-Azhar Street
