About Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened in 2023 and is the world’s largest archaeological museum, situated at the foot of the Giza Plateau just 2 km from the pyramids. Spanning over 480,000 square metres, it houses more than 100,000 artefacts spanning 5,000 years of ancient Egyptian history β€” including the complete, fully restored Tutankhamun collection of over 5,000 objects displayed together for the first time.

The museum is a remarkable feat of modern architecture β€” a vast glass-and-concrete structure designed to let visitors see the pyramids in the background as they walk through ancient history. The highlight is the Tutankhamun galleries, which display the famous golden death mask, the solid gold coffin, royal thrones, chariots, and everyday objects from the boy king’s tomb. Allow a minimum of 3 hours; dedicated visitors often spend a full day.
