Saqqara Step Pyramid: Complete Visitor Guide
Egypt's oldest stone pyramid — the Step Pyramid of Djoser and ancient necropolis of Memphis
About Saqqara
Saqqara is Egypt’s oldest and most extensive ancient necropolis, serving as the royal burial ground for Memphis — once the capital of ancient Egypt — for over 3,000 years. The site’s crown jewel is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2650 BCE by the architect Imhotep. It was the world’s first large-scale stone structure and the architectural precursor to the smooth-sided pyramids at Giza.
Beyond the Step Pyramid, Saqqara contains a remarkable density of ancient monuments: the Pyramid of Unas (with the oldest known pyramid texts inscribed inside), the Serapeum (an underground gallery of massive bull sarcophagi), the beautifully painted mastaba tombs of nobles, and several lesser-known pyramids from different dynasties. Saqqara lies 30 km south of Cairo, about 45–55 minutes from Cairo Airport, and is usually combined with the nearby ancient ruins of Memphis on a half-day excursion.
What to See & Experience
Step Pyramid of Djoser
The world's oldest stone building — a revolutionary six-stepped pyramid designed by architect Imhotep. Surrounded by the beautiful Heb-Sed court with its elegant proto-Doric columns.
The Serapeum
An extraordinary underground gallery where the sacred Apis bulls were mummified and buried in enormous granite sarcophagi — each weighing over 60 tonnes. A deeply atmospheric underground experience.
Painted Noble Tombs
The mastaba tombs of Old Kingdom nobles feature some of the finest painted reliefs in Egypt — scenes of everyday life, feasting, farming, and hunting, brilliantly preserved after 4,500 years.
