About Saqqara

Saqqara is Egypt’s oldest and most extensive ancient necropolis, serving as the royal burial ground for Memphis — once the capital of ancient Egypt — for over 3,000 years. The site’s crown jewel is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2650 BCE by the architect Imhotep. It was the world’s first large-scale stone structure and the architectural precursor to the smooth-sided pyramids at Giza.

Beyond the Step Pyramid, Saqqara contains a remarkable density of ancient monuments: the Pyramid of Unas (with the oldest known pyramid texts inscribed inside), the Serapeum (an underground gallery of massive bull sarcophagi), the beautifully painted mastaba tombs of nobles, and several lesser-known pyramids from different dynasties. Saqqara lies 30 km south of Cairo, about 45–55 minutes from Cairo Airport, and is usually combined with the nearby ancient ruins of Memphis on a half-day excursion.

What to See & Experience

Step Pyramid of Djoser

The world's oldest stone building — a revolutionary six-stepped pyramid designed by architect Imhotep. Surrounded by the beautiful Heb-Sed court with its elegant proto-Doric columns.

The Serapeum

An extraordinary underground gallery where the sacred Apis bulls were mummified and buried in enormous granite sarcophagi — each weighing over 60 tonnes. A deeply atmospheric underground experience.

Painted Noble Tombs

The mastaba tombs of Old Kingdom nobles feature some of the finest painted reliefs in Egypt — scenes of everyday life, feasting, farming, and hunting, brilliantly preserved after 4,500 years.

Practical Tips

1The site is large — comfortable shoes are essential
2Combine with the ruins of Memphis (15 min drive) for a complete day
3The Serapeum requires descending stairs and walking underground — not suitable for those with mobility issues
4Bring water — the site is largely exposed with limited shade
5A guide is strongly recommended to identify and explain the numerous tombs
6Visit in the morning before the midday heat intensifies

Getting There

🚗
Private Car from Airport
45–55 min direct. Best option — combine with Memphis ruins in the same trip.
🚕
Taxi from Cairo City
40–50 min from central Cairo. Negotiate a waiting fee so the taxi waits during your visit.
🚌
Organised Day Tour
Most efficient — tours from Cairo include transport, guide, and entry to both Saqqara and Memphis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are extraordinary but very different experiences. Giza is more dramatic and iconic. Saqqara is richer in variety, less crowded, and arguably more interesting historically — it spans 3,000 years of ancient Egypt. Many visitors who have time do both.
Saqqara is approximately 30 km south of central Cairo, about 40–50 minutes by car. From Cairo International Airport it is approximately 45–55 minutes depending on traffic.
The Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara is the world’s oldest large-scale stone structure, built around 2650 BCE by the architect Imhotep for Pharaoh Djoser. It consists of six mastabas stacked on top of each other in diminishing size, reaching 62 metres in height — the architectural ancestor of the Giza Pyramids.
The interior of the Step Pyramid was closed for restoration for many years and has recently reopened for limited access. Check with your guide or tour operator for current access. Other tombs at Saqqara (such as the Pyramid of Unas) can be entered with an additional ticket.
Technically yes — they are about 12 km apart by road. However, a full day is required to do both justice. We recommend combining Saqqara with Memphis, and doing Giza separately.
Absolutely. Saqqara is one of Egypt’s most rewarding sites — less crowded than Giza, historically fascinating, and packed with extraordinary monuments. The Serapeum alone is one of the most impressive underground experiences in the ancient world.
